Website Redesign Checklist: How to Relaunch Without Losing Traffic

A new website should bring more enquiries, not fewer. Yet many redesigns lose search traffic overnight. Use this checklist to relaunch safely.

A redesign is a great opportunity to modernise your brand and improve conversions. It is also one of the easiest ways to lose years of Google rankings if it is done carelessly. The difference lies in preparation.

Before You Start

  • List every page that currently brings traffic or enquiries, using Google Search Console and Analytics.
  • Note your current rankings for important keywords so you can compare later.
  • Decide the goal of the redesign: more enquiries, better mobile experience, clearer services.
  • Keep a full backup of the existing site.

Protect Your URLs

If a page URL changes, set up a permanent 301 redirect from the old address to the new one. Without redirects, visitors and Google land on error pages and the ranking value of the old page is lost.

Do Not Throw Away Content That Ranks

Pages that rank well usually do so because of their content. Improve and update them, but do not replace detailed pages with short, design-heavy versions that say less. Keep page titles and headings relevant to what people search for.

After Launch

  • Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console.
  • Check for broken links and pages returning errors.
  • Test forms, phone links and WhatsApp buttons on real phones.
  • Monitor traffic and rankings weekly for the first two months.

WebDigiGrow redesigns websites with a migration plan that protects existing rankings, then improves speed, structure and conversion on top of them.
